BREAKING: Sony and PlayStation brand to skip E3 2019
Sony has announced that it will not attend the biggest game conference of the year in 2019 and will reveal alternate plans soon
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced plans to skip E3 2019.
The company said Thursday that it will share plans for “…new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you,” according to a report from Game Informer.
This is the first time Sony has skipped E3 in 24 years.
Sony also decided to cancel its annual PlayStation Experience event for 2018, which begs the question of when they’ll showcase their upcoming games and hardware. More importantly, it begs the question of when.
This doesn’t come as a total surprise as more and more game publishers, developers and studios have pulled out of E3 in recent years or held their own events.
Nintendo has presented its Nintendo Direct and Treehouse events for quite some time in lieu of traditional E3 presentations. Microsoft and EA have each opted to put on their own events in recent years and months as well.
It’s no secret that there are issues with leadership and repetition when it comes to the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo. The industry is also evolving as more and more companies move to their own websites like the PlayStation Blog and Major Nelson’s blog as well as social media channels.
It’ll be interesting to see how another of the big three pulling out of the conference will affect its attendance.
According to Variety, a statement from the Entertainment Software Association, the body that puts on E3, confirmed Microsoft and Nintendo will be participating in E3.
E3 2019 takes place June 11-13 in Los Angeles.
