Oculus Rift VR headset now up for preorder, costs $599.99 (Update)
The price has been revealed for the Facebook-owned virtual reality system and it’s not cheap
Update: We’ve added the finalized PC specifications as well as hardware requirements.
The innovative virtual reality system that Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg purchased back in March 2014 for $2 billion has been in development for a long time and has seen many developer iterations, but this is the first consumer model. In fact, it was Oculus that inspired Sony and other companies to work on VR headsets of their own.
Sony has yet to reveal pricing for its PlayStation-branded VR headset — probably because it was waiting to see how much Oculus would cost — but expect it to be somewhere in the same ballpark. Most of us figured more details, including pricing, for PSVR would be revealed this week at CES, but that wasn’t the case.
According to the official listing for the Rift, purchasers will receive the Rift, an Xbox One controller (which works with the Rift thanks to a partnership with Microsoft – Oculus Rift will work natively with Windows 10) and the games EVE Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale as well as the cables, sensor and Oculus Remote required to use the system.
The system will also have a separate touch controller input device, but that has been delayed until later in the year.
The specs for the Rift are below. Yes, it requires four USB ports!
Graphics card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater
Processor: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
Memory: 8GB+ RAM
Output: Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
Input: 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port
Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer
If you’re still unsure your PC will be compatible with the Rift, the preorder page on the company’s shop website has a compatibility checker tool you can use before you buy.
You can preorder the new VR system here, if you have enough pennies in that old jar in the corner, of course. The Rift will ship sometime in March and preorders are limited to one per customer.
On the other hand, those who had faith in the future of virtual reality from the beginning can keep saving those pennies for that dream trip to Paris. That is, if they don’t just visit Paris virtually.
