Rumor: Is Sony bringing back Crash Bandicoot?
Several alleged teases over the last couple of years seem to suggest the franchise may be heading back to PlayStation
awesome trailer that featured all things PlayStation. Observant fans pointed out that there might even be a tease, or at least an homage, to one of PlayStation’s original exclusive megahits with an apparent throwback to Crash Bandicoot.
Around the 48 second mark in the video, a sign can be seen off to the right with what appears to be the Sony Entertainment logo from the PlayStation days and a silhouette of Crash Bandicoot underneath. It’s a subtle reference, but in a video that asks fans to find all 50 Easter Eggs, it’s an interesting reference indeed.
Fast forward to 2015 and Sony’s PlayStation Experience keynote address when we pointed out that “Shawn Layden, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, [was] wearing a Crash Bandicoot T-shirt” while on stage during the presentation. He never made mention of the shirt and it wasn’t asked about in post-conference interviews by the PlayStation team.
Now there’s a new apparent tease. This time, the official PlayStation Twitter account for the Middle East has tweeted the picture you see above this article back on February 6 with what appears to be a drawing of Crash Bandicoot and the words “Most wanted person … Where are you Crash ?” written in Arabic, according to Google Translate.
So, what does all this mean? We’re not sure at this point, but it’s definitely interesting. The first two could easily just be homages to PlayStation’s past, but the most recent one is the most intriguing. It seems like an odd thing for an official PlayStation account to be posting if it ends up being just a fun post, but that’s certainly possible.
With E3 2016 just around the corner, it’ll be interesting to see if anything else leaks or is teased about a possible Crash comeback in the coming weeks. Of course, there is always the issue that Activision apparently still owns the rights to the Crash Bandicoot IP, but it’s also possible that Sony and Naughty Dog are working with Activision on bringing the beloved series back or, as has been theorized in the past, that Sony purchased the IP back from Activision.
