Sony announces full specs for the PlayStation 5

Here’s the full breakdown of all the gigs, flops and frames

Sony has unveiled the full specifications of its upcoming PlayStation 5 video game console.

The reveal came via a deep dive posted on the PlayStation Blog Wednesday by Senior Vice President for Platform Planning & Management Hideaki Nishino.

The post features a breakdown and update on features as well as a video, which was live streamed, where Sony’s lead system architect Mark Cerny discussed all of the details gamers have been wanting to know for months.

Perhaps the most exciting news was the confirmation of backward compatibility on the PS5 and some details on how that will be implemented.

“We’re excited to confirm that the backwards compatibility features are working well,”  Nishino wrote. “We recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5. With more than 4000 games published on PS4, we will continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time.”

The console itself and its controller have still not been revealed nor has a price or release date beyond a holiday 2020 release window.

Cerny’s 52-minute video discusses the PS5’s CPU, GPU, storage, memory, sound and more.
