Sony Vue brings broadcast and On-Demand TV to PlayStation and mobile devices
Subscription, cloud-based television service to launch next year following testing period
Sony announced Vue back in January and since then, the company has been hard at work getting networks on board. Vue will be a cloud-based TV service that will allow Vuers (see what we did there?) to watch broadcast and On-Demand programming.
Sony says there will be a month-to-month subscription fee, and though the company has not revealed the price, Sony execs say it will be competitive with services like Netflix. Shows can also be saved for later. Sony says saved shows will be stored in the cloud for 28 days and that there is no restriction on how many shows can be stored.
Thus far, networks include CBS, Fox, Viacom, Discovery, NBC and Scripps Network. Sony will be rolling out the service for a testing period in New York and later in Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles via invites that will be sent out to select PlayStation Plus members in the areas mentioned.
Testers will have access to around 75 channels on the PS4 and PS3. The iPad version will also receive a test period later on. In addition to watching and storing TV shows, Vue will offer favorites, searches, recommendations and category filtering by genre, ratings, popularity and length.
